In order to get to my internship on time I left school around 11:50. Sometimes it took me one hour or a little less to get there. My schedule was basically from 1:00 to 4:00 most days. Some days I worked extra hours, and at the end of those weeks, I’d earn 15 hours. I mostly got home at 4: 30 because HABNET was close to my house.
At HABNET I worked as an office assistance. I made phone calls for events, sent invitations for events, and learned to make flyers. I also learned how to fax documents. Faxing is actually pretty cool when you think about it. You don’t even need a mailbox or mailman. Wow, that’s technology!
HABNET- Haitian American Business Network Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting higher business standards and better methods, as well as fostering trade and commerce in the community. HABNET site provide business education and financial literacy to their members and the public. It promotes the general welfare and prosperity of the community by encouraging entrepreneur and civic engagement. The program serves young people primarily in the 10th and 11th Congressional Districts in Brooklyn, NY between the age of 16 and 23.
My Mentor’s name is Jackson Rockingster. He is a very kind person. The first time when I arrived at HABNET, I was so nervous. I didn’t know what to expect from it. I didn’t know what it was about. I feel so different because he made sure that I understood everything clearly without problems.
One specific thing I loved about my internship was that I learned to challenge myself as a mentee. My best experience of this whole internship is that now I think I’m interested in business. Setting the goal of going into business has made me different than I was before and now I have enough confidence to proceed.
The biggest challenge that I faced was making phone calls. When it comes to phone calls I totally feel overwhelmed. It feels a little stressful calling people because I never felt comfortable talking to strangers on the phone. My Mentor helped me overcome this challenge it made me think that I can do anything if I put trust into it.
My advice for a new Intern at this site is a great experience for students interested in business first of all and it’s knowledgeable at the end they will be very proud of doing it.
Before I started internship I thought it was going to be something that I would be more interested in. It didn’t really turn out that way. My goals for the internship were to learn as many new things as I possible and to gain new experiences in the business world. Working at HABNET is one thing that makes me interested in business.
For the past twelve weeks I have learned so many things, that I will always remember. For example, my English has changed for the better. At work, we spoke English most of the time. I learned to thing outside of the box (I challenged myself and realized that everything is possible if you put trust into it.)
As a result of interacting with professional adults, I have grown mature and responsible. Most importantly, I take my responsibilities at the job more seriously. I always take initiative in doing work and also am proactive in getting things done. My relationship with my mentor and my co-workers is very respectful. To be more efficient, we helped each other out and we cooperated a lot. Compared to the IHSL environment, my workplace environment is both different and similar. In internship we definitely get along with each other, work quietly, and everyone had their own job to do. Sabrina, Stephens, and I focused on what we were doing whether we liked it or not. At IHSL, we get to work in groups and share work with each other.
. For the past twelve weeks I have learned so much from
Mr. Rockingster. He had taught me how to be professional worker. Mr. Rockingster had taught me the importance of business. He also pushes me with confidentiality to get through such hard things. He reminds me to always think outside of the box (nothing is impossible if you put all your trust into it).
When it comes to something difficult he makes me challenge myself and always collaborate with others.
I have gain a great experience working with Mr. Rockingster. The best thing about internship is that I have to encourage myself in certain things and how to be a professional worker.
